ST. CLAIR – Mike LaPorte cherishes the vote of confidence in his restaurant’s signature dish.
“It’s the best on the river. We are famous for our perch,” LaPorte, owner of the Voyageur in St. Clair, said. “Out of all the people we have come in, there is at least one order of perch to each table. It’s lightly battered, cooked in butter. It’s just a great piece of fish.”
Best in The Blue voters agreed, making the Voyageur’s perch their overwhelming choice.
At $13.95 a plate for lunch, their lake perch platter comes with a choice of soup or salad, as well as a side of potatoes and a vegetable. The dinner portion is larger than lunch, coming in at $17.95.
Most often, the perch is ordered lightly floured and sautéed, but LaPorte said diners can also order the perch fried.
Marysville resident Leila Johnson said she first tried the perch at The Voyageur six years ago and hasn’t stopped since.
“They do have the best fish dinners around,” Johnson said. “It’s a must. They don’t have a lot of thick batter on it, and when they serve it to you, you know it’s all fish.”
St. Clair resident Joyce Richards said she chose to vote for The Voyageur’s perch dinner as the best in the area because “it just tastes better.”
“It’s light and done really well,” Richards said. “Every time my son comes into town he wants to go over there because he can’t find any like it where he lives. It just tastes better. If you like fish that’s the place to go.”
