ST. JOSEPH – The Dollar General on Napier Avenue is expected to close by the end of next week.
Store Manager Heidi Berg confirmed the retailer’s departure, stating the building’s lease will not be renewed based on a decision made by Dollar General Corp., which is based in Tennessee.
Berg said the plan is to close by next Friday, June 19. The company has to have everything out of the building by June 30, when the lease ends.
The store at 810 Napier Ave. has five workers and will keep its normal hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. for its remaining week.
Berg said workers were told of the news last month after negotiations broke down and corporate decided not renew its lease in St. Joseph. Berg said staff hung a large sign, which states, “Store Closing,” and that everything is for sale.
This comes a few months after construction started on a CVS pharmacy across from Dollar General, which sits near Napier and Niles intersection.
CVS will encompass previous site of Florin Funeral Home at 2506 Niles.
It was not confirmed whether the new CVS pharmacy had an impact on the Dollar General closing. Phone calls and emails made to Dollar General’s corporate office were not returned.
