ST. JOSEPH — Nominations for the St. Joseph High School Performing Arts Hall of Fame inaugural class has begun.
The Performing Arts Hall of Fame steering committee released applications online Monday to nominate individuals for induction into the hall of fame. The nominees will be honored toward the end of the 2015-16 school year.
The hall of fame, which was created this summer, will recognize school alumni who have distinguished themselves in one or more performing arts fields.
St. Joseph High School Principal Kevin Riggs said that because the process is new he is hoping to receive at least 10 nominations.
“I’m hoping people will respond and give us a good list to choose from,” he said.
As for how many will be accepted, Riggs said the number will be based on how many nominations the committee receives.
“It was initially going to be one per year, but the more we talked about it, we realized there doesn’t have to be a specific amount each year,” he said. “We’re not going to go with any specific number each year.”
Any individual can be nominated for induction as long as they fall under one of three categories.
As a contributor, the nominee will be a person who has given their time, talent or resources to the performing arts program, its staff and students. As a mentor, an individual will be nominated for being a current or retired St. Joseph performing arts staff member or administrator, who has provided guidance and innovation to the performing arts program.
The third category will be as an alumnus who participated in the SJHS performing arts program and graduated at least 10 years prior to nomination.
All nominations are due by Dec. 31, while nominees will be chosen by the committee in January. The class of inductees will be announced next spring and recognized at a concert at the high school.
“We have an Athletic Hall of Fame and now we will have a Performing Arts Hall of Fame,” Riggs said. “I have had people ask me about an Academic Hall of Fame and that might be something we look at next.”

Once forms are completed with the necessary information, they can be dropped off at the high school or mailed to Kevin Riggs, postmarked at 2521 Stadium Drive, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
