DOWAGIAC — A Dowagiac couple opened a bakery a little more than two weeks ago that caters to the area’s four-legged residents.
Deb and Curt Rohdy, owners of Bow Wow Bakery & Bath at 145 S. Front St. in downtown Dowagiac, bought the store next to Underwood Shoes two years ago and began renting out the space.
Then, in February 2015, they began remodeling the store to turn it into what it is today.
“We’ve had a lot of activity,” she said. “It’s been a lot busier than I anticipated. People have been coming in just out of curiosity. I had people from Valparaiso, Ind. Last week, there was a lady from Seattle, Wash. who happened to be in the area.”
The business is easy to spot, as the windows depict the business’ logo, which is based off an image of one couple’s own dogs, a golden doodle named Reggie.
Deb is a retired employee of Dowagiac schools and thought up the idea of a dog grooming shop during her trips around the state with her husband.
“We travel a lot with our automobile club. We look at a lot of pet stores. Dowagiac didn’t really have something like this,” Deb said. “I love being around dogs. I’ve always loved dogs. I’d much rather be up moving around than stuck at a desk.”
Bow Wow has self-serve pumps for people to bathe their own dogs, and groomers to handle private appointments from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
The dog haven carries a line of dog food made in Wisconsin. They sell collars, leashes, dog toys and handmade baked treats. The new downtown fixture has a seating area where people can sit and wait while their dogs are groomed.
Bow Wow Bakery & Bath is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are accepted. To set up an appointment, call 269-782-6776.
