ST. JOSEPH — Students and parents will be able to walk, jog and run Saturday while raising funds for the St. Joseph High School band.
The school is introducing a program called My School Color Run. The 5K fun run/walk will be 2-4 p.m. at Riverview Park. Money raised will go toward new band uniforms.
“We are extremely excited about the launch of the My School Color Run program at our school,” said Debra Trapikas, event co-chairwoman.
Color runs involve participants the opportunity to wear white shirts and have colored powder splashed across these shirts throughout the run. Trapikas said the more colors one has, the prouder one can feel because color signifies a percentage of a mile the participants just ran.
The uniforms the SJHS band is wearing are more than 16 years old. They are a suggested seven years behind schedule for replacement.
“We want to engage the entire community and encourage local businesses and corporations to get involved in what we hope will become an annual event for the band to raise funds for new uniforms, equipment and instruments and other items,” Trapikas said.
Director of Bands Aaron Engleman said he’s been researching band uniforms for the past three years for durability, wear, tolerance, temperature control and material. He’s found two uniforms that would work, which are comparable to each other in type and in price.
The uniforms would cost about $75,000.
In addition, the color guard – which consists of 10-14 students each year – will get costumes more seasonally fit for the Twin Cities area. Students have been wearing short-sleeve outfits in cold weather during performances.
On the run
Saturday’s color run is considered an untimed fun run. Racers will pass through several color stations throughout the course and end with a color toss.
Interested participants can register by completing a paper registration form and returning it to the school office or by registering online at www.sj-band-colorrun.eventbrite.com.
Anyone interested in more information or a paper copy of the My School Color Run registration form can pick one up at the high school secretary’s office. Registration on race day will be $30, and additional donations are accepted.
If unable to participate but still wanting to help the school band, there are three levels of sponsorship being offered: Allegro at $1,000 and up; Andante is $500-999; and Adagio is $100-499.
Donations in other denominations are accepted and can be made online at the same address.
For those who would like to sponsor the event, call 269-861-0718 or 269-861-1961 for more information.
